Pluto, the planet of life, death, and transformation at the deepest core levels returns to the sign of Aquarius, where it will remain for the next 20 years. This planet works beneath the surface of life to expose and give rise to hidden truths and dismantle our worn out and dated systems, catalyzing our planet in profound transformational change. These influences, like bright skies or rainy days, fall on all of us equally, but it's how we translate these energies in our own personal lives, both as individuals and social groups, and literally as countries, that determine how this energy is channeled throughout all of life.
When Pluto is transiting the sign of Aquarius, it marks a major shift with revolutionary implications both in societal, technological, and individual levels. Pluto, the planet of transformative power and deep evolution moves very slowly, roughly 20 years in each sign. Its entrance into Aquarius signifies the beginning of a new era lasting until 2043. But before we discuss what's coming up, let's take a look at Pluto's last transit through Aquarius for some context as to what to expect. Although none of us were here 240 years ago I believe you will find the events of those days to be some of the most profound in our historical understanding of where we are today.
The last passage of Pluto through Aquarius was from January 21, 1778 and lasted until April 27, 1798. This was a period of significant societal upheaval including powerful shifts in early America. Revolutionary ideals, technological innovation and evolving debates around liberty and equality shaped our country's foundations, laying the groundwork for future developments. As mentioned, Pluto is a global energy. If we look closely, we can see that not only was the United States being formed and born, but all of the rest of the civilized world was going through profound changes as well.
One of the deepest elements that corresponds directly to Pluto's influence was the movement of The Enlightenment as it was then called, which put forth the very revolutionary idea of establishing a framework of government rooted in and sharing authority through the collective societal process of democracy. There were also tremendous technological and industrial breakthroughs as well. At this time in history, the fledgling United States along with the rest of the world stepped into the age of industrialization. It was this burgeoning global manufacturing industry in particular that remade the infrastructure of nations accordingly. Innovations like improvements to the steam engine, the cotton gin, and the rise of factory systems transforming the labor force are just a few examples. These along with other global breakthroughs reshaped the economy and society of the entire world.
Ours was not the only revolution during this time period. The French Revolution was closely aligned to what was happening in the United States, as were other governments and countries who were going through similar shifts in power and vision throughout this passage of Pluto through Aquarius. In Africa, there was the expansion of the transatlantic slave trade and the beginnings of resistance, as anti-slavery movements began gaining traction globally, laying the groundwork for the 19th century abolition movement. Asia, India, China and Japan went through turbulent times and saw the rise and fall of the power structures shift dramatically throughout these geographically diverse locations. Even Latin America underwent its own Bourbon Reforms. Revolutions prompting independent movements emerged that shaped the face of those societies. These countries, as well as the Middle East, Ottoman Empire, Iran, Oceana and Pacific European influenced cultures saw colonization and global trade shifting to economic mercantilism and capitalism. These multiple power dynamics reshaped the structure of the then known world creating new priorities in how society was to interact and come together in the quasi-global village environment we see today.
These events and machinations are in all the history books. I only mention them here to point out what a turbulent time it was during Pluto's last passage through Aquarius. The sign Aquarius is the sign of the water bearer (truth) and Pluto is the tool of truth, and like the God Shiva embodies both destruction and regeneration. With that being said, and taking into consideration the nature of Pluto's profound, and all-encompassing impact, what can we look forward to in the next 20 years?

The challenge and resistance to change is in almost every instance deep, profound, and often violent. The power structures that rule now will do any and everything to resist change, as humanitarian growth is the antithesis of their existence. During the times ahead we will begin to see ethical dilemmas in terms of right and wrong, with a general assault on truth itself. We are already experiencing societal fragmentation as ideological polarization creates deep divisions, despite the fact that we share collective needs. Technology
Looming on the horizon are profound technological and scientific breakthroughs. Artificial Intelligence, automation, and revolutionary advances will redefine the way industries view employment and communication. Certainly, over these next 20 years we will see a greater desire for space exploration and human colonization. New discoveries in astrophysics may shift humanity's perspective to a grander vision as perhaps our first colony on Mars emerges. One of the major technological breakthroughs that has yet to hit us will be quantum computing. This new breed of computing will have transformative impacts on healthcare, medicine, data systems, communication, astronomy, research, space travel, and will touch most areas of life in some way. However, as the speed of life increases, many may find nervous system disorders emerge as feelings of not being able to keep up can become an affliction. Because Aquarius governs technology, we will see major breakthroughs in the digital and virtual realities of daily life. Great debates will arise over the use of this new technology over the human spirit. Ethical dilemmas come to the forefront over such issues as genetic testing, and the challenge to moral and privacy norms becomes intense.
Aquarius represents groups, networks, and the collective, emphasizing shared visions for the future. Pluto will drive changes that move toward a global unity and restructured communities that transcend traditional boundaries. Innovation in government and new forms of collaboration, such as decentralized systems or cooperative models, will float to the surface and the power struggles between individuals and systems of control most assuredly will intensify with groups demanding total reform.
Money and Power

Look for an ongoing development in the decentralization of power on a global basis. Economic systems will begin to include and rely more heavily on such relatively new elements as blockchain and decentralized finance. Digital currencies will challenge traditional banking, financial institutions and the medium of currency itself. Breakthroughs amid the desire to establish one global currency is one of the major areas that we will see arise. Currently in governance and governments, we see a definitive push toward populism, strong dictatorial type leaders, and their loyal followings. But grass roots movements will most assuredly emerge proposing and advocating for a greater participation in new democratic systems over the current hierarchical ones. The last 240 years saw a tremendous push for individual freedom. The next 240 years will see that complete, with the next 20 years truly defining the new stepping stones moving forward. Global cooperation with an increased collective action on climate change and other global challenges will also come into the picture as it becomes evident that the planet is not sustainable for future generations. Aquarius is the sign representing the brotherhood and sisterhood of all humanity. It is with this future goal that these forces now shape and direct us.
Identity and Personal Freedom
One of the greatest areas coming under Pluto's influence will be redefining identity. Evolving notions of identity, gender and personal freedom will shape cultural discourse. The freedom to be oneself without any external influence whatsoever continues to be on the rise and will not be swept under the rug of discrimination. Each person being free to pursue their own truth is one of the major hallmarks of both Aquarius and Pluto. These are important factors in personal expression and creativity. Productivity can only reach its peak when individuals are free to be creative, not only within the confines of their environment but also in the confines of their own bodies.
Marginalized communities on a global level will want a greater voice in the distribution of the world’s wealth. It's been said that currently 70% is held by only a handful of individuals. This is not sustainable and over this next period of time these structures will break down as advocates for freedom of individuality and equality will simply cease to participate in a society that is not acknowledging their right to be included.
On the upside we will see renewable energy and the widespread adoption of sustainable energy sources. Wind, solar, and new systems yet to be discovered come through. Carbon capture and geoengineering may mitigate climate change as the focus turns to preserving biodiversity, air quality and ecosystems. It becomes evident that our planet is our only home; without an express and definitive plan for rejuvenation, we may find ourselves headed for extinction. These kinds of emergency measures take hold over the next 20 years and it does appear the possibility exists to mitigate the damage.
Societal Structure and Community

Aquarius is a sign of collective consciousness, innovation, and humanitarian ideals. Pluto's presence here suggests a restructuring of societal systems, particularly those involving the power dynamics and how governing systems take the well-being of the individual into consideration. It appears the emphasis will be directed toward egalitarian communities focused on new models of social interaction.
As mentioned above, the amplification of grassroots efforts to activism and collective demand for justice, equality and inclusion will rise to the surface during this time. It's hard to imagine that these won’t be met with great resistance from the establishment. Much like our trials in this country with King George of England some 240 years ago, it's easy to see conflict, even war, in the pursuit of the dignity of human beings and their right to be free to choose their own destiny.

For planet Earth… This means taking a step back from the themes occurring over the next 20 years and asking ourselves… why? Why is this happening? What are we supposed to see and what does this all mean? The changes occurring are an opportunity to steer the ship of humanity into a better way of life and embrace our collective destiny as a people. Pluto and Aquarius represent deeply spiritual themes. This transit has the potential to signify a deeper alignment with Aquarian ideals and usher in a period linked to higher awareness, interconnectivity and the dismantling of outdated belief systems standing in the way of our collective evolution. Innovations and spiritual progress will align humanity with a greater sense of oneness, bringing us together as a planet for our collective destiny. The ultimate message is this… until we, as a civilization, include all habitants of this beautiful planet, Mother Earth, and live together in peace and mutual respect, we will not have the opportunity to reach our full potential in reaping a better life for all.
While it seems unlikely that we will be able to accomplish all of this within 20 years, keep in mind this is only the first step on our current 240 year journey. Certainly, these advancements seem to be well within the grasp of attainment given that length of time. If there is any doubt, we need only to look back to 1776 to see how far we have come!
For the individual… It is time to embrace your own unique identity, expressing your own individuality without necessarily conforming to outdated norms. Break free from rigid patterns of thought and behavior to align with collective progress and work on releasing past traumas tied to exclusion or rejection. Foster a sense of belonging to larger networks without being totally caught up in this onslaught of technology coming our way.
To quote one of the greatest geniuses of our time, Albert Einstein, “there is more to life than increasing its speed.” A.I. and technology cannot dream, create, or know itself as a sentient being. It cannot experience beauty and awe or create a song of inspiration or write an original poem nor can it love and be loved. It has no intuition and will never know spirituality. Hold fast to these qualities as they are the true definition of what it means to be ‘human’ and the most beautiful of creations that we are.
