The Moon in astrology is considered to be the receptive principle of life itself. It is from the primary association with the divine feminine that the Moon takes its definition and main identity. While the Sun is masculine, expressive, the Moon is feminine, receptive. Between the two of them they represent the yin yang of all existence. These two forces, the Sun and the Moon, formulate the very basis of all of the nurturing cycles that exist on our planet. The solar cycle brings light and life’s vitality, and the lunar cycle brings nurturing and preparation for birth. These two basic fundamental forces, expressive and receptive, are the most important to us as human beings. Without them, we do not exist.

The Moon is considered to be all things feminine and intuition is often closely associated as one of its qualities. Almost all psychic ability and experiences as well as the capacity to determine and interact with realities beyond the three dimensional world can be ascribed to the Moon. The Moon is believed to be associated with a person’s emotions, instincts and subconscious mind. It represents how we as individuals receive impressions from our reality and process them into our life events and perhaps even more importantly how we express our feelings. The Moon is all about feelings.
Because the Moon also represents the sign cancer, which is associated primarily with home, motherhood, and family, it is also equated with sensitivity, empathy, and sympathy. Our ability and capacity for love, be it romantic, spiritual, or in any way experienced or expressed, can be directly associated to the placement of the Moon in a person’s natal chart. More than any other placement in the astrological chart the Moon represents our relationship with our mother or mother figure.
In the natal placement, that is, where the Moon is placed in the birth chart, it represents emotion, and whatever our ability may be to experience life events with an intuitive and corresponding emotional interaction. In relationships for example the placement of each person’s Moon by sign, house and aspects, can tell us whether any couple would be in natural accord and whether as a relationship they would be potentially in harmony or discord. Also, more importantly, these placements can show us or give us great insight into each person’s capacity to love, that is, the degree to which they would be able to experience emotional love and, correspondingly, be able to express this greatest of all emotions. In a chart comparison, the Moon is considered to be, along with the Sun and the ascendant, the most telling factors as to compatibility.
The Moon is associated most closely with the astrological sign Cancer. Those individuals with the sign cancer dominant in their chart will be seen to have most of these qualities in one degree or another. They are highly sensitive, primarily with how they feel in the moment and can be very affected by people’s opinions of them. Cancer individuals are known as the moodiest of all the signs. This is due to the fact that the Moon itself changes signs about every 2 1/2 days, as it makes its way through and around the zodiac. Cancer individuals, and to a somewhat lesser degree the other water signs are known to go through their highs and lows as the cycle unfolds monthly. The lunar cycle is closely associated with the feminine cycle of 28 days, as it takes 28 days for the Moon to make its journey through the twelve signs. The position of the Moon at birth, as well as its phase such as the new moon or the full moon, can determine quality. Additionally, if a person was born at the time or even near the phenomenon of a lunar or solar eclipse, this can also represent the intensity by which an individual may express their lunar potential. These factors can be extremely telling and can be the most dominant driver or feature in a person’s entire chart.
For example, if a person was born with the Moon in a water sign, Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, they are often considered emotionally sensitive, highly intuitive in nature with a profound capacity for love. If on the other hand, the Moon is placed in the signs Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius, they can easily be perceived as more intellectually driven in their emotional responses. The same can be true of a placement in the earth signs, Taurus Virgo, and Capricorn, as perhaps these individuals are more concerned with material acquisition and advancement in the material world. Lastly, if the Moon is placed in a fire sign, Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius, these individuals represent great vitality and a high capacity for intensely emotional expression as is often perceived in actors, musicians and poets. The Moons expression in anyone sign is rarely singular. In almost every case it is modified to a great extent and redirected through the aspects and the interactions it makes with the planets, signs and qualities present in the rest of the chart.
